More Than Mountains: Todd Huston and Adventures in Education 10/16-17/13
“If I have startled your mind, exposed the fear you hold onto, and have left hope in your heart, then I have done what I have come here to do,” said Mr. Todd Huston, the Rochester School for the Deaf (RSD) 2013 Adventures in Education program special guest presenter.

Mr. Huston is an amputee, author, world record holder and inventor whose life is committed to inspiring others to be their best. With his journey of pain, determination and adventure, including his expedition to the highest peaks in all 50 United States, others are able to overcome their challenges. His story helps everyone realize they too can reach new heights of well-being, success, and happiness.

During October 16-17, 2013, Mr. Huston visited every academic department at RSD – from Early Childhood Programs to High School. Students and staff were able to ask Mr. Huston questions about his life before and after he lost his right leg. He also had questions of his own for RSD students, about their lives as children and young adults who are deaf and hard of hearing.

At the Adventures in Education Underwriters “Thank You” Reception and RSD Founder’s Awards Ceremony, Mr. Huston met many of the school’s most loyal and generous benefactors. The program was held Wednesday evening, October 16, in the historic home of Jonathan Child, Rochester’s first mayor. The awards ceremony included Mr. Bernard Hurwitz, President of the Board of Directors, presenting the Perkins Founder’s Award to Mr. James Carr and the Lyon Founder’s Award to Dr. Ronald Stern. At the conclusion of the awards ceremony, Mr. Huston provided underwriters and sponsors with a preview of his Thursday evening, October 17, community presentation in the RSD auditorium.

On Thursday, Todd Huston shared with RSD students, families, staff and supporters his vision of a world where there are no boundaries to the potential good a person can be or experience. He said that his hope is that everyone can break free of the bonds of fear that hold them back from the power to do good for themselves, their loved ones and for the world.

"Our state-of-mind can create a life and culture that either keeps or breaks our self-imposed barriers," Huston said. "Throughout history those who changed the world did so by overcoming their challenges, fears and doubts, and so can YOU! Every challenge is an opportunity. Every opportunity is a challenge. Thank you RSD – I will see all of you at top!,” he added.
